  • TEAM FUND POLICY

    Policy Statement:

EMSA South acknowledges that Selects coaches and their teams may wish to establish a team fund starting from their inaugural season.

    Purpose of a Team Fund:

A team fund may be created to cover costs related to tournaments, practice space, travel, team events, equipment, photos/promotional materials (e.g., banners or yearbooks), and team apparel.

Methods of Raising Funds for a Team Fund:

Teams can raise money for their fund through one of the following methods:

    Funds Collected from Team Parents:

The amounts collected from team parents should be documented, and the expected contributions should be communicated at the start of each season. A budget detailing how the funds will be spent (including the items listed above) must be shared with all parents before requesting and collecting funds. A copy of this budget should also be available upon request from the Selects Director.

    Fundraising Activities:

Teams may choose to undertake fundraising efforts to offset costs for parents. Examples of fundraising activities include bottle drives, item sales, raffles, or events.

The Selects Director must be informed by the head coach or team manager of any planned fundraising activities. If a license is required for an event, EMSA South may assist the team in obtaining it, and, with approval from the Executive Committee, the license may be issued under the EMSA South name.

    Sponsorship:

Teams may seek sponsorship for specific events or general team expenses. Per EMSA regulations, all sponsorship requests must be approved at the zone level and receive final approval from the Edmonton Minor Soccer Association (EMSA Rule 107).

    Process for Sponsorship Approval:

Coaches must notify the Selects Director of any potential sponsors and the terms of sponsorship.

The Selects Director will seek approval from the zone (EMSA South) before submitting the request to EMSA through the EMSA South President (or designate).

    Management of the Team Fund:

The team fund should be managed by the team manager or a designated team treasurer throughout the season. A separate bank account must be maintained for all funds collected or raised.

Following a team’s inaugural season (when a new team is formed or a team undergoes a change in coaching staff), the team should aim to establish an account in the team’s name, not under the manager's or treasurer’s name. This account should require dual signatures, typically from the team manager and treasurer.

After the inaugural season, the team fund must be managed by a manager or treasurer who is not related to the head coach.

Requests to Opt Out of Expenses:

Parents may occasionally request to opt out of paying for certain team expenses (e.g., if a player is unable to attend a tournament). As a policy, such requests will not be accommodated to avoid complications in team administration.

Return or Carry-Over of Team Funds:

At the end of each season, an income and expense statement must be provided to all team parents, detailing the total revenues collected and expenses incurred. A copy of this statement should also be available to the Selects Director upon request.

    Funds Collected from Team Parents:

These must be returned to the parents at the end of each season. The income and expense statement should document the amount returned to parents.

Funds Raised Through Fundraising Activities: These may be carried over to the next season until the team disbands or reaches its final U18 season.

Funds from Sponsorship: These may also be carried over until the team disbands or completes its final U19 season.

The Selects Director will determine when a team disbands.

If a team disbands, any unspent funds raised through fundraising or sponsorship will revert to EMSA South and be allocated to the EMSA South hardship fund. Similarly, if a team completes its final U19 season with unspent fundraising or sponsorship funds, those funds will also revert to EMSA South for the hardship fund.

Exception – Transition to the EDSA Adult Program:

EMSA South supports teams transitioning from the EMSA South youth program to the EDSA adult program as Selects FC teams. In this case, a U19 team may apply to carry over any unspent funds raised through fundraising or sponsorship to offset costs in the EDSA program.

The head coach or manager must submit a request to the Selects Director, who will then present the request to the EMSA South Board for approval.

  • REFUND POLICY

Refunds are available following tryouts, but only before team rosters are finalized. A $35 administration fee will be applied to all refunds.

Once a player is added to a Team ASA Roster, no further refunds will be issued.

If a player voluntarily leaves the team or is removed for misconduct at any point during the season, no refund will be provided.

  • PARENT, PLAYER, COACH CONDUCT

    Player Code of Conduct

    Obligations Toward the Game

Arrive prepared to learn and give coaches and trainers my full attention, as their goal is to improve both my skills and the performance of the team.

Practice independently to enhance my abilities in skill, technique, tactics, and stamina.

Always give my best effort during games, even when the team’s desired result has already been achieved.

Maintain control of my temper and avoid retaliation, even if I disagree with a decision. Displays of anger will not be tolerated on or off the field.

Exhibit good sportsmanship before, during, and after games, and conduct myself with honor and dignity. Avoid gamesmanship and time-wasting tactics.

Always consider the best interests of the game, including when publicly expressing opinions about the game or its participants.

    Refrain from using inappropriate language.

Set a positive example for others, particularly young players and supporters.

    Obligations Toward the Team

Contribute to the team’s success by adhering to the principles of Fair Play and the Laws of the Game.

Resist any influences that could undermine or be perceived to undermine my commitment to helping the team succeed.

Show respect to my teammates at all times.

Respect for the Laws of the Game and Competition Rules

Know and follow the Laws of the Game, as well as the rules and spirit of the competition.

Accept both success and failure, victory and defeat, with equal grace.

    Respect Toward Opponents

Treat opponents with respect at all times, regardless of the outcome of the game.

Protect the physical well-being of opponents by avoiding violent or reckless play.

    Respect Toward Referees

Accept the decisions of the referee without protest.

Show proper respect toward referees at all times.

    Respect Toward Team Officials

Follow the instructions of my coach and team officials, as long as they align with the spirit of this Code.

Show respect toward the officials of opposing teams.

    -----

    Coach's Code of Conduct

A coach’s primary commitment is to enhance both the physical and mental performance of players and the overall team.

Coaches are responsible for providing a high-quality soccer environment that promotes a positive atmosphere for players to thrive.

A coach must be well-versed in the ASA, EMSA, and FIFA Laws of the Game and stay informed about effective coaching principles.

Coaches must treat all players and officials with respect at all times.

Players should be taught to compete and win within the boundaries of the Laws of the Game.

Coaches should approach their role with enthusiasm and positivity, ensuring that praise is given generously when deserved.

A coach must uphold the highest standards of personal conduct and fair play.

Coaches should avoid any situations that are offensive or contrary to the values upheld by the Selects program.

    ----

Parent and Spectator Code of Conduct

We all share the responsibility of promoting high standards of behavior in the game. The expectations and attitudes of parents and spectators significantly influence a child’s attitude toward:

    Other players

    Referees

    Team officials

    Fellow spectators

It is crucial to support the Selects program by showing respect and helping ensure that soccer is enjoyed in a safe and positive environment. Remember, children’s soccer is an opportunity for them to develop their technical, physical, tactical, and social skills. Winning should not be the only focus.

    Parents:

Remember that children play for FUN.

Applaud effort and good play, as well as success.

Always respect the decisions of match officials.

Stay outside the field of play and within the designated spectators’ area.

Allow team officials to do their job—let the coach be the coach.

Respect the decisions of team officials during the game.

Follow the team officials' and Selects' rules for conflict resolution (e.g., the 24-Hour Rule).

Support team officials in matters of team and player discipline.

Encourage players to respect their opponents, referees, and other match officials.

Do not criticize players for making mistakes—mistakes are a natural part of learning.

Never engage in or tolerate offensive, insulting, or abusive language or behavior.

    Consequences for Non-Compliance:

Failure to follow the Code may result in any of the following actions by Selects, MWSA, or EMSA:

A verbal warning from a Selects or league official

A required meeting with the club committee

Being asked to leave the match venue by a team or league official

A request not to attend future games

Removal from the Selects program, along with any dependents

By adhering to this code, we ensure a positive and respectful environment for all players and participants.
